Movie Review

Inside Out 2: A Journey Through Teenage Emotions

“Inside Out 2,” produced by Mark Nielsen, follows Riley as she navigates the emotional challenges of becoming a teenager. Building on the original emotions from the first film—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—the sequel introduces new emotions: Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy.

Riley is thrilled to be invited to a high school hockey camp with her friends. However, the night before camp, she starts puberty, causing Anxiety to take over and eject the original emotions from her mind. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust must work together to bring balance back to Riley’s emotions.

The film appeals to all ages. Younger viewers enjoy the colorful animation, while older audiences appreciate the humor and the relatable depiction of growing up. The animation and character designs are excellent, with Maya Hawke’s voice for Anxiety capturing the character perfectly.

The movie simplifies the science behind emotions, showing Riley’s thoughts and the brainstorm that happens when Anxiety is in control. While the film suggests puberty happens overnight, it still effectively portrays the emotional ups and downs of adolescence.

“Inside Out 2” also highlights an important lesson: no emotion is bad; they all play a part in who we are. The film shows that a balance of emotions, including anxiety, is essential for a healthy personality.

Overall, “Inside Out 2” is an entertaining and thoughtful film that explores the complexities of growing up, making it a hit with a domestic opening of $155 million. It’s a fun, bittersweet reminder of the emotional journey we all go through.
