Movie Review

Director Murugan’s “Pagalariyaan” opens with the promise of a tense gang rivalry but quickly shifts focus to Wolf (Vetri), a character caught in a romantic entanglement with Akshara (Akshaya Kandamuthan), and the ensuing challenges they face. However, the film struggles to capitalize on its initial premise, resulting in a disjointed narrative and underdeveloped characters that fail to engage the audience effectively.

One of the film’s primary flaws lies in its sense of self-importance. Each scene seems to aspire to significance, yet none manage to resonate. The characters, including the protagonists and supporting roles, remain paper-thin throughout, lacking the depth needed for viewers to invest emotionally in their fates. This deficiency is evident right from the outset, where the motivations behind the gang rivalry are inadequately explored, leaving the conflicts feeling hollow and arbitrary.

Vetri’s Wolf is intended to be a complex figure, but the screenplay fails to provide sufficient backstory or development to justify his actions or evoke empathy from the audience. Similarly, Akshaya Kandamuthan’s Akshara, despite being positioned as a romantic interest central to the plot, lacks substantive characterization beyond her love for Wolf. The film hints at Wolf’s hidden motives and moral ambiguity but fails to delve deeper, leaving crucial aspects of his character unexplored.

The narrative structure itself is erratic, akin to a rushed drill where each plot point is hurriedly introduced without proper buildup or resolution. The pacing suffers as a result, with the film attempting to cover too much ground in its relatively short runtime of less than two hours. Instead of allowing the story to unfold organically, “Pagalariyaan” relies heavily on exposition to explain its narrative elements, further detracting from the viewer’s immersion in the plot.

Performance-wise, the cast struggles to elevate the material they are given. Even Sai Dheena’s comedic cop character, meant to provide levity, feels out of place amidst the film’s serious undertones. The lackluster technical aspects, including generic music and uninspired cinematography, do little to enhance the viewing experience.

In essence, “Pagalariyaan” squanders its potential to be a compelling romantic thriller. While it borrows thematic elements reminiscent of films like “Paiyaa,” it fails to capture the same energy and emotional resonance. Instead, it becomes a test of endurance for the audience, navigating through a narrative riddled with missed opportunities and superficial characterizations.
