Movie Review

“Teenz” is a Tamil film that begins with an intriguing premise but ultimately falls short of its potential. The story revolves around a group of 13 teenagers who decide to bunk class and visit the village of one of their grandmothers. This decision leads them into unexpected and dangerous territory as they face a series of ghostly encounters, and one by one, the teens start to go missing.

The film picks up pace once the kids skip school and begin their journey, encountering supernatural elements along the way. However, the narrative takes a sharp turn after the interval, introducing a new character played by Radhakrishnan Parthiban. This shift in focus disrupts the film’s intensity and slows down the proceedings, as Parthiban’s character lacks depth and fails to add the intended gravitas.

When the spotlight remains on the teenagers, the film retains some of its charm. Despite their frequent crying, screaming, and running, the fresh faces of the young cast manage to keep the audience engaged. However, the second half of “Teenz” attempts to delve into more ambitious themes, but it never fully conveys the grandeur or ethereal quality it aims for. The dialogue, especially when an older character lectures the teenagers, feels more like a classroom lesson than an insightful conversation.

The film struggles with tonal consistency, oscillating between mellow moments and intense sequences without finding a satisfying middle ground. D Imman’s music generally complements the film’s mood, though some songs feel unnecessarily forced into the storyline.

Yogi Babu’s cameo, anticipated to be a refreshing change, disappoints. His two brief appearances add little to the narrative and feel shoehorned in. Other supporting characters, including the parents of the teenagers and a mysterious female character, are underdeveloped and fail to evoke any emotional investment from the audience. This lack of character depth is a significant drawback, especially when the parents’ reactions to their missing children are depicted without any real impact.

“Teenz” is a film with an exciting concept that is not fully realized on screen. While the young cast brings a novel energy to the story, the film’s inconsistent tone, underdeveloped characters, and forced narrative elements detract from its overall effectiveness.
