Movie Review
“White Rose” dives into a harrowing tale of Divya (Kayal Anandhi), whose life spirals into despair after a series of tragic events. Ostracized by her family for marrying a Muslim, she loses her husband to a fatal accident soon after celebrating her birthday with their young daughter. The plot thickens as her daughter is kidnapped by a loan shark, pushing Divya into desperate measures, including venturing into sex work to secure her child’s release.
Director K Rajashekar crafts an initially thrilling narrative, punctuated by eerie music and unexpected scares. The film grips viewers with its adrenaline-pumping setup and non-linear storytelling, despite occasional hiccups in the screenplay. The core theme of addressing a seldom-discussed crime adds depth initially, yet the film’s momentum falters in its latter half.
RK Suresh’s portrayal of the silent, menacing antagonist, a serial killer with a psychological disorder, promises intrigue but lacks exploration. The lack of a compelling backstory leaves the character emotionally detached, diminishing the impact of his presence. Meanwhile, Anandhi shines with a compelling performance, convincingly portraying a mother fighting against odds for survival.
While “White Rose” maintains suspense and builds towards a major revelation, the final act succumbs to repetitiveness and illogical character actions. Despite escalating danger, Divya’s survival tactics appear implausible at times, detracting from the tension meticulously built throughout. The film’s ending, though predictable, takes an unnecessarily convoluted path, leaving viewers questioning its relevance to the titular motif.
“White Rose” begins as a promising thriller but loses steam in its execution, weighed down by repetitive sequences and missed opportunities in character development. Anandhi’s standout performance and initial suspense are overshadowed by a narrative that struggles to sustain its early intensity, resulting in a film that fails to fully realize its intriguing premise.
