Movie Review

Writer-director V Priya’s “Pon Ondru Kanden” is a love triangle that, like many films in this genre, takes a meandering route to reach its point. The story revolves around Siva (Ashok Selvan) and Sai (Vasanth Ravi), childhood foes turned friends. At the start of the film, their younger selves fight over a classmate named Sundari. Years later, Siva becomes a gynecologist and a womanizer, still searching for the right girl. His casual approach to relationships leads to a humorous but unsuccessful scene where he mistakes a girl sent by his sister for a marital arrangement as a patient, resulting in an awkward interaction that ends in a slap.

On the other hand, Sai struggles to care for his mother, who has dementia. He is depicted as a clueless gentleman who fails at impressing girls and eventually seeks Siva’s advice on relationships. Sai’s character is portrayed as a quintessential “boomer uncle,” humorously outdated and out of touch.

Despite a promising buildup of their school-and-college-time rivalry, the film quickly shifts to show Siva and Sai becoming close friends, revealing “Pon Ondru Kanden” as a lighthearted film where conflicts resolve themselves effortlessly. The narrative remains uneventful until the arrival of Aishwarya Lekshmi’s character, Sandy, who brings some life into Siva and Sai’s mundane existence. One of them knows Sandy from the past but hesitates to discuss it, not wanting to ruin their friendship.

The film cleverly uses the song ‘Pon Ondru Kandein’ from the Sivaji Ganesan film “Padithal Mattum Pothuma,” with the lyrics, “Nee partha pennai naan parkavillai,” encapsulating the situation of Sai and Siva. However, this cleverness is not consistent throughout the screenplay. A bizarre stretch of storytelling occurs when Sai tells Siva that Sandy got married young, a point she also insists on, but there is no visible age difference between her past and present versions, breaking the film’s authenticity.

Additionally, four songs appear within 20 minutes in the middle of the film. While two advance the plot, the others feel crammed into the narrative. The hurried proposal scene following a meet-cute moment feels forced, making the execution appear rushed and unpolished.

“Pon Ondru Kanden” is a misleading title, and the film’s central idea that comes together at the end is more intriguing than its execution. Despite the weak screenplay, two of the lead characters start to grow on the audience, which is perhaps the best outcome for such a vanilla rom-com. The three leads try to inject some spark into the narrative, but their performances often feel more suited for an advertisement than a feature film. The actors’ light-hearted approach helps maintain a casual tone, but the film would benefit from more genuine comedy, especially in its meandering climax.
