Movie Review

“Picking the right milestone film is a gamble,” they say, but Vaibhav’s 25th venture, “Ranam Aram Thavarel,” proves to be a calculated risk that pays off. Directed by debutant Sherief, the film sees Vaibhav step out of his comedic comfort zone into the role of Siva, a former co-director turned facial reconstruction artist embroiled in a gripping investigation thriller.

In “Ranam,” Vaibhav’s portrayal is notably restrained, with a salt-and-pepper appearance and a penchant for cryptic dialogues that underscore his character’s introspective nature. The narrative unfolds with Siva delving into a complex serial killing case, where he navigates through murky clues and psychological depths to uncover the truth.

Sherief’s direction takes bold strides, blending elements of redemption, revenge, and vigilante justice against the backdrop of a compelling psychological disorder. The film challenges viewers with ethical dilemmas and presents a nuanced exploration of crime and justice, questioning societal norms and personal morality.

While the film’s non-linear screenplay initially teases multiple narratives and red herrings, it eventually ties them together in a satisfying manner. However, some loose ends and unexplored plot devices leave room for interpretation, adding to the film’s enigmatic appeal.

Vaibhav’s performance anchors the film, supported by strong portrayals from Nanditha Shwetha and Tanya Hope, who bring depth to their respective roles as pivotal characters in Siva’s investigative journey. Each character, though with varying degrees of exploration, contributes to the film’s multifaceted narrative.

“Ranam Aram Thavarel” is not without its flaws, including ambitious themes that occasionally stretch the narrative’s cohesion. Yet, its thematic richness and Vaibhav’s bold departure from typecasting elevate the film, leaving audiences pondering the complexities of justice and morality long after leaving the theater.

“Ranam Aram Thavarel” marks a commendable milestone for Vaibhav and a promising debut for director Sherief, blending intrigue, suspense, and ethical introspection into a thought-provoking cinematic experience.
